Paul's understanding of marketing, both traditional and social was extremely beneficial, and when coupled with his ability to shoot emotive photographs, proved to be a winning formula for increasing brand awareness.
Paul invests himself into his work, particularly when he has a passion for what he is doing, and I would have no hesitation on recommending him to prospective employers looking for an energised individual who is passionate about what they do.
Paul leaves us to pursue other passions he has in the photography and marketing world and I wish him all the very best in his future endeavours."
I was contracted by Lotus Cars Australia between 2016 and 2018 to run automotive digital marketing and event management for the brand. The responsibility was to led the activities through their Sydney dealership Simply Sports Cars who are an official Lotus Cars Dealer.
Using a mix of content marketing, SEO, public relations and community management I helped generate more than $3M in new vehicle sales growth on a marketing budget under $50,000, the same approach applies to any brand, product, service or tour in the automotive space, whether that’s cars, 4WDs, accessories or upgrades.
I was re-engaged in 2020 to rebuild the local dealer website which also delivered record results.
Why Lotus Cars in Australia needed a marketing consultant

Lotus is a sports car brand that’s changed ownership and distribution several times in Australia without ever building significant sales volume or brand exposure. When Simply Sports Cars, the top-selling Lotus sports car dealership in the country, secured the distribution rights, they brought me on as an outsourced marketing resource rather than hiring a full-time employee, lower overall cost, with the experience of someone who’d normally command a much bigger salary.
The brief was simple and the constraint was real: grow exposure for the brand and sell more vehicles, without a big media budget to do it.
What the strategy needed to deliver
With a limited budget, the brief was to leverage every asset and relationship available rather than buy attention. That meant:
- Website content creation
- Social media management
- Forum and online community management
- SEO development
- Lifestyle photography
The focus throughout was the people and the community around Lotus ownership, not car specifications or studio photo shoots. Every piece of content showed real owners getting real enjoyment out of driving events, track days and the social side of ownership.
Since the local dealership couldn’t make changes to the global OEM website, I rebuilt the local dealer website as the main platform for reaching Australian consumers, the same approach any local dealer or reseller can take when they have a trading agreement with a global brand but no control over the manufacturer’s site.
The first work was focused on bringing the ownership experience to life through content: stories and photos of real people enjoying their cars, shared across social media, local forums, car clubs and other platforms to reach new audiences while keeping existing owners engaged.
The engagement ran just over two years without any agency involvement, the bulk of the work was done in-house to keep costs down and keep the brand’s voice authentic. Here’s what that covered:
- Website search engine optimisation
- Website content creation using photography and videography
- Vehicle and event photography
- Social media, forum and Facebook group community management
- Public relations management with local media and car clubs
- Event management for vehicle displays and driving events
- Marketing collateral for the showroom and events
- Google My Business listing optimisation
- Google Analytics and Google Search Console optimisation
- Google Ads campaign management
Building an SEO advantage instead of relying on carsales.com.au

Every car dealership in Sydney lists stock on carsales, and one of the real costs of that channel is that you pay per lead, including people who are just browsing. Cost per acquisition can run up to $100 a vehicle. The industry stays locked into it because the platform is dominant: SimilarWeb estimates carsales.com.au gets over 12 million visits a month, more than 12,000,000 visits a month, against roughly 7,000,000 for its closest competitor, Cars Guide.
A dealer’s own website is the way to compete with that, not with generic manufacturer copy or seasonal promotion banners, but with genuinely useful, keyword-rich information that answers the questions real buyers are searching for. When the Lotus Emira launched in 2021, I spent a few minutes researching what people were actually asking about the car online, then wrote content on the local NSW dealer’s website that answered those questions directly. Organic traffic grew quickly, and visitors started arriving from around the world, not just locally. Overseas visitors don’t convert to a local sale, but they strengthen the page’s ranking for the topic, so local Australian buyers researching the same questions find the dealer’s answers too.

Want proof it’s still working?
Search Lotus Emira in Australia yourself. Even years after that content was written, Simply Sports Cars was holding a top 3 position alongside news sites and the OEM’s own global site. Although as of 2026 this is no longer the case as a lot of the previous content was removed.
The same approach works for any automotive business selling products or services, not just new cars. I used the same content and SEO strategy for Adrenalin Offroad Centre, a Sydney 4WD shop, and delivered a 7x improvement in their organic search traffic year on year. It’s the same principle either way: answer the specific questions real buyers are asking, rather than repeating brochure copy, and you pick up organic search traffic that a generic dealer or OEM template never will.
This is what generated thousands of unique page views for the Lotus dealership, which contributed directly to vehicle sales and also helped sell servicing, upgrades, modifications and events that sold out completely. All of it built lasting organic visibility, and I didn’t rely on paid advertising to get there.
The results
With the same vehicle range, the same pricing and no discounting, Lotus recorded its first year of sales growth in four years, while other brands recorded declines over the same period according to VFACTS data. Every piece of this was tracked through Google Analytics, Google Search Console and each social platform’s own insight tools, so the business owners could see the real results as they happened, backed by qualitative feedback from an increasingly engaged community of owners on social media and local forums.
Highlights from the engagement:

What the people I worked with said
During our time working together Paul demonstrated excellent in-market activation of marketing activity with fantastic results."

Keep in touch, and good luck!"

However it's good to see that your passion is pushing you to higher goals!
Definitely look forward to seeing you around as much as possible."
Your contributions to Lotus have been indescribable. It went from a small back street garage where I spent plenty of time watching Lee tinker with my car while I irritatingly stood by and passed the occasional tool to him(usually the wrong one), and now to see it represent the whole of us I Australia in a professional and well run organisation.
I wish you well mate, and hope you enjoy your next venture."
Many thanks for being the most dynamic force I've ever seen in car marketing and for giving us more than a few chuckles on the forum.
Sorry I never got to meet you in person (just never at Lotus at the same moment as you nor at the same track days) hope to see you at the track in the future. Best wishes for your new endeavours."
Could these results continue without me?
When the engagement ended, I handed over a specific list of recommendations to keep the momentum going:
- Keep sharing stories about the people and the community driving the cars
- Avoid cheap gimmicks or seasonal discounting to sell cars
- Maintain a presence on local forums and Facebook groups
- Keep attending grassroots events to engage with car enthusiasts
- Share content across every platform, including Google My Business
- Avoid brochure-style wording, and keep the tone personal
A second engagement in 2020: a new dealer website

In late 2020, I was engaged again to review how the dealership’s traffic had evolved since I left in 2018. Growth had been strong heading into the end of 2018, but without continued content and community activity, traffic had plateaued: new content wasn’t being created, and social and forum engagement had dropped off.
The dealership decided to build a new website with an ecommerce store to sell vehicles, spare parts and modification products, timed to support a new vehicle launch.

The rebuild delivered record website visitor levels quickly, and for a period it out-ranked the manufacturer’s own website for certain keyword phrases as well as news sites. It’s further proof that a local dealer can compete with a global OEM’s own site using the right marketing consultant and the right digital marketing tactics.
If your dealership, workshop or automotive business is relying on carsales listings and OEM template copy to generate leads, get in touch to talk through what a content and SEO strategy could do for your visibility instead.
