Marketing for retailers

The demand is out there. Is it finding you, or the shop down the road?

Retail lives on footfall, online sales and repeat customers. I check what your marketing spend is actually producing, with real data and facts, then show you in plain English how to bring in more of the customers you want, without racing to the bottom on price.

What I usually find

The everyday problems I find in retail marketing

When I audit a shop, fashion label, food business or consumer brand, the same problems turn up again and again. Most owners don't know they're there.

Ads paying for the wrong searches. "Free", "cheap", job seekers and products you don't stock, all charged to your account.

No conversion tracking. Nobody can say which sales or enquiries came from which dollar of spend.

Reports that count activity, not sales. Rankings, impressions and clicks, but never the number of sales.

Discounting to compete. Nothing on the website explains why you're worth more, so price does all the talking.

A Google Business Profile left half finished. Wrong categories, few photos and no routine for collecting reviews.

A website that doesn't work on a phone. Slow, hard to buy or book, and stock photos instead of your own products.

Accounts in someone else's name. The domain, website or ad account belongs to the agency, not the business.

Real examples

The problem, and the improvement I delivered

Real situations from retail and consumer clients, plus a pattern I see in every industry.

Bridal designer The problem

A talented designer almost invisible online

Fewer than 200 visitors a month, against more than 200,000 monthly searches in Australia for the category.

The improvement

A new website built so people searching generic terms could find her.

Users up 119% after launch

Rentals The problem

A market racing to the bottom on price

Competitors were discounting rentals to $80 to $90 and dragging everyone with them.

The improvement

Positioning and search visibility that held the average rental at $120.

$500,000+ growth, then $1M+

Food and hospitality The problem

A new shop up against competitors trading 15+ years

A brand new fish and chip shop needed to be found locally, fast, on an affordable budget.

The improvement

Google profile, website, Instagram and local press, all at launch.

Page one in weeks, 6,000+ Google interactions

Consumer electronics The problem

A global brand with no real English-language website

A Shanghai VR start-up with limited digital marketing and no tracking in place.

The improvement

A rebuilt website with full tracking and content for each market.

Search impressions up 4x in 10 days

Consumer electronics The problem

A private-label TV range with no marketing team

Sold through Big W, with no product reviews and a brand not built for growth.

The improvement

Outsourced product marketing, refreshed branding and media outreach.

First mass media reviews, across four outlets

Security manufacturer The problem

23% of traffic paid for, zero enquiries

Everyone assumed the advertising was working. Nobody had checked.

The improvement

Ads switched off, the money moved into the website and its SEO.

Leads up 49%

How many of these sound familiar?

These turn up again and again when I look inside a business's marketing.

Your monthly report is full of graphs but never says how many calls or quotes you got.

You don't have the login to your own Google Ads account or website.

You're locked into a 6 or 12 month contract.

They talk about "rankings" and "impressions", not sales.

You're paying marketplace or app fees on customers who'd have bought from you directly.

You're discounting to compete because nobody explains why you're worth more.

Your website shows stock photos, not your products, shop and customers.

Nobody can tell you what one lead costs you.

Your "marketing" is boosting Facebook posts.

How I work differently

A typical agency or contractor versus working with me

A specialist looks after one channel and gets paid whether the rest of your marketing works or not.

I look at all of it: your website, ads, social media, content and how your brand comes across. If something outside the job I'm doing is holding the results back, I'll tell you, because it affects whether my work pays off.

Get recommended by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity

More customers now ask an AI assistant who to call, as well as Google and Google Maps. Whether it's called SEO, GEO, AEO or AIO, it comes down to one thing: being the business that search engines and AI platforms trust enough to recommend.

Getting cited isn't about gaming the system. AI platforms quote businesses that publish clear, specific and trustworthy information about the work they do. That's what I help you create.

You deal with me, start to finish

I've sat on the client side of the agency report

Before going independent in 2015 I spent 20 years in senior marketing roles, signing off agency budgets at Logitech, Hewlett Packard, Lotus Cars and Dick Smith. At Lotus Cars Australia I helped deliver $3M+ in new vehicle sales growth on a marketing budget under $50,000.

So I know what a padded report looks like, and which numbers an agency leaves out. For you, that means one person who checks the work, explains it in plain English, and puts every account in your name.

Questions

Retail marketing questions, answered

What retail and consumer business owners ask before booking.

I already have an agency. Is this still worth it?

That's usually when it's most useful. I check independently whether what you're paying for is turning into customers and sales. Stay with them or don't, either way you'll know.

I run one shop. Is this only for bigger brands?

No. Fish Cove was a single new shop and reached page one against competitors trading 15+ years. The check is scaled to your size and market.

Do I have to stop selling on marketplaces?

Not straight away. We compare what each sale costs you there against what your own website could bring in, then decide.

What do I need to give you?

Access to Google Ads, Analytics, Search Console and your Google Business Profile, plus your last agency report and invoice. Every account stays in your name.

How quickly will I see more customers?

Fixing your Google profile, tracking and wasted ad spend can show up within weeks. Fish Cove had 6,000+ Google interactions in its first few weeks. SEO builds over months and keeps compounding.

Will you lock me into a contract?

No. Fixed prices, a retainer or a payment plan, with the scope agreed before anything starts and no lock-in.
