Case Study: Marine Business SEO Case Study

A Queensland marine business relied entirely on word of mouth. Organic search visits grew from 39 to nearly 500 in a year, real proof of what's possible.

A Queensland marine business: from 39 organic visits to nearly 500 in a year

    Client location: Rockhampton QLD

    • Organic search visits grew from 39 in January 2021 to nearly 500 by year end

    • Close to 700 page views generated from that growth

    • Achieved entirely within the constraints of an existing, non-WordPress platform

    • Real, honest proof of what’s possible, and what was left on the table
Marine business new website mock up

In 2021, a marine business in Queensland came to me with a self-built website that did two jobs: offer diesel engine servicing to the local area, and sell marine parts and accessories through an online store. The business had a genuinely strong reputation, real expertise in diesel engines, real word-of-mouth trust, but the website wasn’t doing anything to extend that reputation beyond the people who already knew them.

    What I found

    • No organic growth beyond the brand name itself. Anyone already looking for this business by name could find them. Nobody searching for diesel engine servicing or marine parts without already knowing the name had any real chance of finding them

    • Growth entirely dependent on referrals and word of mouth. A genuinely strong foundation for a local trade business, but a ceiling on how far it could scale

    • A real technical constraint. The site wasn’t built on WordPress, and moving it wasn’t part of the brief. Any work had to happen within the existing platform’s structure and limitations, not by replacing it

    What I actually did

    • Built new home and service pages within the existing brand framework and platform, rather than migrating to a new one

    • Provided direct guidance on how the ecommerce product pages should be structured and optimised, since the owners specifically wanted to manage and update those themselves going forward

    • Focused the available structure on genuinely representing the diesel servicing expertise the business was actually known for

    The results

Cumulative page view growth for new marine business website
Cumulative organic search growth for new marine business website
    • Organic search visits grew from 39 in January 2021 to nearly 500 by the end of the year

    • Close to 700 page views generated across that growth

    • All of it achieved while working inside an existing platform’s constraints, not a full rebuild

Where the results were left on the table

Being honest about this, since it’s a genuinely useful example of a foundation without full follow-through: the owners didn’t proceed with the next phase of work that would have compounded these early results.

So no case studies or real project examples were added showing the range of engines and boats actually being serviced. The service offering was never broken out into more specific, individual, pages the way a highly competitive category like this needs. Even though they had a great reputation there were already hundreds of other service providers offering similar things so without truly unique content it becomes hard to compete.

The ecommerce product pages, despite the guidance provided, were never fully optimised by the team managing them either and their focus in this area shifted as well. I wasn’t surprised either because all the products could easily be found on many other websites there was nothing unique or different about them.

None of that erases what the numbers above show though and with further work focussed on the unique parts of their service offering maybe focussed on boat models or brands they could have built a much larger audience.

In the end a roughly twelvefold increase in organic visits, from a standing start, on a platform that wasn’t even built for this kind of growth, is real evidence of what deliberate, focused work can do even under real constraints. It’s also a clear example of the same pattern that shows up across several other case studies on this site: the foundation is often the easy part. The compounding growth comes from what gets built on top of it afterward, and that part only happens if someone keeps investing in it.

If your business has a strong reputation locally but isn’t being found by anyone outside your existing network, get in touch and I’ll show you what’s realistic, even within whatever platform you’re already on.

I work within whatever platform a business already has when a full rebuild isn’t the brief, and I’m upfront about what further investment would unlock versus what a first-stage foundation can achieve on its own. If your website’s reputation doesn’t match your business’s real reputation, see how I could help.
