Case Study: DPVR VR brand’s website & SEO

DPVR's English site had zero technical SEO, just static images. A rebuild took keyword breadth from 41 phrases to 700+ within weeks.

DPVR: rebuilding a VR headset brand's English-language website

    Client location: Shanghai, China

    • Organic search impressions up more than 4x within just 10 days of launch

    • Recognised keyword phrases grew from 41 to over 700 within a matter of weeks

    • Close to 5,000 pageviews on the new site within the first few weeks

    • Genuine traffic growth across nearly every non-China market almost immediately

    • Early top-10 rankings for training-related content, translating directly into sales leads

    • Full Analytics, Search Console and Tag Manager tracking installed for the first time
"Working with Paul together is a wonderful journey. DPVR is a Shanghai based Chinese brand VR startup with limited knowledge of digital marketing, public communication and building an official website etc.

Paul helped us from 0 to 1 build up a website to get more traffic and leads coming from the B2B market and worked closely with DPVR's marketing team to provide more professional news releases for the website and media.

I strongly recommend Paul as a professional marketing consultant for SME companies and organizations in local or other Asian countries."

I was contracted by DPVR, a virtual reality headset manufacturer that had grown quickly since founding in 2016, almost entirely within their domestic Chinese market. Their English-language site existed for international markets, but they didn’t believe it was generating any real exposure but they wanted to being the journey of reaching new customers around the world with a B2C / B2B website.

    What the audit found

The site looked reasonable on the surface. Underneath, it was close to invisible to search engines: every page was built from a single static image rather than real, readable text, headings or structure. No Google Analytics was even installed. There was no active SSL certificate. The only search terms the site ranked for were the brand name itself and specific headset model numbers, nothing that would help a new customer discover DPVR at all.

    What I actually did

    • Ran a full digital marketing audit and competitor research

    • Built a new WordPress site with Elementor

    • Wrote genuine copy across the entire site

    • Sourced, edited and properly renamed the full photo catalogue

    • Set up Google Analytics, Search Console and Tag Manager

    • Rewrote previous press releases and converted existing social content into genuine on-site content

    • Provided ongoing reporting and social media direction under a monthly retainer

    • Close to 5,000 pageviews on the new site within weeks

    • Genuine growth in non-China traffic across nearly every country almost immediately after launch

    • Every core engagement metric improved together, pages per session, time on site, and total pageviews, not just raw visitor volume

    What did DPVR say

“Working with Paul together is a wonderful journey. DPVR is a Shanghai based Chinese brand VR startup with limited knowledge of digital marketing, public communication and building an official website etc.

Paul helped us from 0 to 1 build up a website to get more traffic and leads coming from the B2B market and worked closely with DPVR’s marketing team to provide more professional news releases for the website and media.

I strongly recommend Paul as a professional marketing consultant for SME companies and organizations in local or other Asian countries.

He has more than 20 years experience in APAC marketing from distributor reseller to consumer electronics products and premium auto brands. He has creative ideas for how to drive sales through marketing activities and save budget to meet KPI targets.

He can support a company’s marketing team and lead them to the next level.”

    What else I flagged

    • No case studies existed, despite years of real sales and real customers using DPVR headsets in education, training and corporate events. That’s genuinely persuasive content sitting untapped

    • Social media had almost no return. LinkedIn generated under 1,000 impressions across 12 months, and less than 3% of all website traffic came from social platforms combined, despite ongoing effort. The better use of that time was building genuine content on the website first, then sharing it out to social, not the other way around

    • No real demand generation existed beyond the reseller network. Paid search or social advertising, run alongside the new content, was the recommended next step to accelerate exposure against competitors

This project was another example of a management team lacking the visibility to know whether their own marketing was actually working. The audit gave DPVR a clear, evidence-based starting point, and the results in the following weeks confirmed the diagnosis was right. If your brand’s website looks fine but you’re not sure it’s actually working for search, get in touch and I’ll audit it properly.

I check the technical foundation of a site before anything else, a site can look polished and still be functionally invisible to search engines. If you’re not sure whether your website is actually being found, see how I could help.
