Case Study: Classic car mechanic website with 290+ enquiries

A 30-year-old Brookvale workshop known for MGs needed a new owner's vision made visible online. Four years on, organic search delivers 60% of its visitors and more than 290 enquiries.

How a classic car workshop known for MGs now services more than 30 makes

Client location: Brookvale, Northern Beaches NSW

    • More than 290 enquiries have arrived through the website forms since the new site launched, in addition to the phone calls and walk-in visits that a workshop of this kind has always relied upon.

    • Between January 2022 and December 2025 the website attracted 11,711 visitors, with 60% of them arriving through organic search and spending an average of 1 minute 55 seconds on the site.

    • Over the last three months, 695 of the 804 clicks the site received from Google search, approximately 86%, came from searches that did not include the business name, which is the clearest evidence that people who had never heard of the workshop are finding it through Google.

    • The workshop now services more than 30 different makes, ranging from routine oil changes through to complete restorations of rare vehicles, having previously been known primarily as an MG specialist.

    • A single engine building service page, added in 2026, recorded 472 page views between April and August 2026, an increase of 143% on the previous year, almost entirely from organic search & generated more than 20 leads on its own.

    • Traffic from May to September 2026 remained within 5.9% of the previous year despite five years without a major content update and the rapid expansion of AI-generated answers in search.

    Darren Freeman
    Director - Peninsula Sports Cars

Peninsula Sports Cars is a classic car mechanic workshop in Brookvale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches that had been successfully owned and operated for more than 30 years with a reputation almost entirely on MG servicing and restoration among a loyal base of long-standing customers.

When the previous owner retired and Darren Freeman took over the business, he inherited that reputation along with a website that had not been meaningfully updated in years. It meant that anyone searching for a classic car mechanic in Sydney or the local area who didn’t already know the existing business would never discover them.

This case study explains how I rebuilt their website, the positioning and the search foundations of the business in late 2021 and what that work has produced across the five years since. This includes some elements that are less flattering, such as the effect of AI search on a site that has received very little new content since launch.

My marketing brief: keep the loyal MG customers and win new ones that have never heard of the workshop

    Darren’s marketing brief contained two objectives that in some senses pulled in opposite directions;

    1. He wanted to create a fresh look and feel for the business.

    2. He wanted to make sure that anything seen online would reassure existing clients that the workshop they had trusted for decades was still in capable hands, while also broadening the perceived range of services well beyond the marques they had always worked on.

It was crucial to achieve this to ensure the business could be sustained but then grow. The obvious commercial risk in a change of ownership is rarely the loss of the workshop’s skills, which usually stay with the mechanics, but the loss of confidence among customers who were loyal to a person rather than to a brand while using an outdated website can amplify that risk as it signals nothing has changed.

Why the change in ownership had to be visible and obvious

Classic car owners are an unusually cautious group of customers because they are handing over vehicles that are often irreplaceable, emotionally significant and expensive to repair if a job is not done correctly. They will actively seek out specialists instead of taking an older car to the local mechanic that does general servicing for modern vehicles.

    Perceived trust is probably higher for this customer group so that means generic claims about quality workmanship, passion or attention to detail carry very little persuasive weight with them. The unique selling proposition for Peninsula Sports Cars therefore could not be a slogan so I built it instead around three things;

    1. Celebrating the 30 years of continuous specialist history in the same location for classic vehicles.

    2. Genuine depth in experience by a team of mechanics that actually own their own sports or classic cars.

    3. Proof of real work on real customer vehicles with examples displayed on the website with encouragement given to Darren to video & talk about day to day work being done on vehicles to prove this even further with videos places on social media.

That third element helped shape the site structure because a dedicated section showcasing individual car projects allowed the workshop to demonstrate its range across different makes through evidence rather than bold claims in headings. So this becomes more persuasive to a sceptical buyer trying to decide whether to use their services.

It is also exactly the kind of first-hand, non-commodity content that Google’s own guidance describes as the foundation of long-term search visibility which I have written about already; how a business is getting leads from Ai and how the way organic search works has changed now with Ai.

What I delivered in late 2021

As an independent digital marketing consultant I completed every part of this new website project personally, without using subcontractors, which meant that the positioning decisions made in the planning stage were carried directly into the new website design, the copy as well as the technical build rather than being diluted from being passed through different people.

AreaWhat I didWhy it mattered commercially
Strategy and site structurePlanned a site architecture around services, makes and completed projects rather than a single MG-focused siteAllowed the business to rank and be considered for work beyond its historical niche
Design and layoutCreated a fresh visual identity on a new WordPress build using ElementorReassured existing customers that the workshop was modern and well run under new ownership
CopywritingWrote all service, about and project copy in plain English aimed at classic car ownersReplaced generic claims with specific, evidence-based descriptions of the work
On-page SEOWrote title tags, meta descriptions and heading structures for every pageGave Google a clear understanding of each page's topic and search intent
Technical SEOConfigured the technical foundations, including indexing, sitemaps and page speed optimisationEnsured the site could be crawled, indexed and loaded quickly on mobile devices
Local SEOOptimised the Google Business Profile for the Brookvale locationImproved visibility in map results for people searching near the Northern Beaches
Analytics and reportingSet up Google Analytics and Google Search ConsoleProvided transparent, verifiable reporting on visitors, search queries and enquiries
Project showcaseBuilt a content section for individual car projects and jobsCreated ongoing proof of range and expertise that customers and search engines could both see

The website design and the SEO copywriting that I did was all completed in unison to ensure that it was convincing enough to generate an enquiry but also had a chance to get found via organic search. It had to be strong because Darren didn’t intend on paying for monthly SEO development after the site was launched.

A strong launch that confirmed the positioning was working

The first two months after launch showed a 48% increase in visitors compared with the same period in 2021, and the accompanying rise in pages per session and time on site indicated that the additional visitors were exploring the services as well as the example projects rather than arriving and leaving immediately.

The increase in Australian visitors to 79% of all traffic was equally important, because a local workshop gains nothing from overseas visitors who will never bring a car to Brookvale, and the shift confirmed that the on-page SEO and Google Business Profile optimisation were attracting the right audience as well.

Organic search delivered the customers who did not know the brand

Comparing November 2022 to January 2023 with the same three months a year earlier, when the new site had only just launched, total traffic had grown by 42% and organic search traffic by 66% which meant the business was getting found online regularly.

A long-standing customer types the business name or rings the number they already know but the owner of a Porsche, a Holden or a DeLorean who has just moved to the Northern Beaches searches for the service they need and tries to find someone they think can help them. Peninsula was quickly attracting new clients.

Google Search Console provided the proof back then and even now. Over the last three months only 109 of 804 Google Search clicks came from searches containing the business name, which means that 695 clicks, or approximately 86%, came from people searching for a service rather than for Peninsula Sports Cars.

More than 290 enquiries from a site that barely changed

From January 2022 to December 2025 the website attracted 11,711 visitors, 60% of whom arrived through organic search.

From launch to September 2026 the site has generated more than 290 enquiries recorded through the contact forms on the site but there would also be a substantial (but untracked) volume of phone calls and on-site visits as well.

So far there has been 32,808 page views recorded across all content since 2022 (although a Google tracking code was accidentally removed from the site and no data was collected between 1 and 30 January 2026)

What makes that result notable is how little was changed to achieve these results, because in almost five years the only updates, apart from the engine building page discussed a bit further down, were revised staff biographies, approximately 10 cars for sale listings and approximately 15 individual car project examples.

The site continued to perform with the original foundations of structure, copy, technical SEO and positioning, Darren hasn’t felt the need to add more content or do deeper SEO development with dedicated inner service pages and the like as they are booked out for months.

Adding a new service page and the shift to AI search

A new engine building page proved what new website content can still do

The must substantial content creation added since the website relaunch has been a dedicated engine building service page that I did the keyword research for and wrote.

It has recorded 472 page views between April and August 2026, an increase of 143% on the same period in the previous year, with almost all of that traffic arriving through organic search.

The business now appears in both traditional organic results and AI-generated answers for a range of search phrases relating to classic car engine building, which demonstrates that a single, well-structured page describing a genuine specialist service can still earn visibility in 2026 when it answers a specific need rather than repeating general information available everywhere else.

The same approach could be taken for other services they offer.

Google Analytics screenshot of car mechanic service pageview year on year growth

Why traffic has softened in 2026

Between May and September 2026 the site attracted 1,896 visitors, a decline of 5.9% on the same period in 2025, while organic search continued to provide 61% of all traffic and AI platforms including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot referred 25 visitors between them.

I consider that a strong result for a site that has not received a major content updates in five years, but it would be misleading to present it as anything other than a plateau, and the cause is consistent with a pattern I have now seen across several clients, in which AI-generated answers reduce clicks to pages that were ranking well for general informational queries.

The reason AI search has sent so few visitors to this site is not a technical fault, but a shortage of in-depth content about classic car ownership, restoration decisions and the specific makes the workshop services, which is the type of first-hand material that AI systems draw upon when they assemble an answer and choose which sources to cite.

The engine building page shows what happens when that detailed content is created for a website and the same approach applied to restoration, rare parts sourcing and make-specific servicing would give the business considerably more opportunities to be cited, as I explain in more detail in my piece on how AI search is changing how customers find your business.

How did a new website help this business & what did the owner say?

Classic car mechanic workshop website mocked up on a laptop

From MG specialist to a 30-make classic car workshop

The most meaningful outcome of this project isn’t all the numbers in the graphs or charts. It comes from the real world results and how the business is perceived,. Peninsula Sports Cars has moved from being known primarily as an MG workshop to a mechanic workshop in Sydney that services more than 30 different makes for customers across Sydney including British makes from MG through to Aston Martins, Fords, Holdens, Ferraris, Porsches and even DeLoreans.

The work the workshop now undertakes ranges from simple oil changes through to complete restorations of rare cars, and that breadth is the direct commercial result of how the brand was repositioned with the new website build and explained clearly on every page while being supported by visible proof of completed projects.

The same principle, in which a specialist automotive business wins new customers by demonstrating expertise rather than describing it, underpinned my work with CCS Tech, an automotive electrical installer, and in both cases the websites continued to generate enquiries for years after launch because they were built around what the customer needed to see before trusting someone with their vehicle.

How a new website could help other mechanic workshops

Peninsula Sports Cars demonstrates that an established business with a strong reputation among existing customers can still be close to invisible to new ones, and that a website built with clear positioning, sound technical SEO and genuine evidence of expertise can close that gap and keep producing enquiries for years with very little ongoing investment.

The results also show the limits of that approach in 2026, because a site that stops adding specialist content will eventually plateau as AI search changes which pages are clicked and cited, and the engine building page shows that the remedy is new, first-hand content rather than another rebuild.

If your own website was built well several years ago and has been left largely untouched since, a digital marketing audit will show whether its traffic is holding, which pages are losing ground to AI answers and where new content would produce the greatest return, and for owners who would rather talk it through first, a one-hour marketing consultation covers the same questions in a single conversation.

If you would like to discuss what a similar approach could achieve for your own business, you can hire me as your marketing consultant and you can read what other owners have said about working with me on my client reviews page.
